Jonnie Cliff - Head PGA Professional
I am originally from Dumfries, and developed my love of golf at Dumfries & County Golf Club. As a junior I became Junior Club Champion and went on to win the Club Championships there twice. As I progressed from junior to adult golf, I represented The South of Scotland golf team over several years, as well as Dumfriesshire, playing from a handicap of +2. In 1994 I then went to Glasgow University to do an Honours Degree in Business Tourism & Leisure Management, graduating in 1998 with a Bachelor of Technology and the Student of the Year Award. After several years working as a marketing manager and 18 months spent in Australia & New Zealand, I finally made the decision to take my love of golf to the next level, and make it my profession. During the PGA 3 year Foundation Degree Course,I won Scottish Student of the Year in each Year as well as the National PGA Student of the Year Award in years 2 and 3. As Head Pro here at Murrayfield Golf Club since December 2007, I'm keen to continue playing competitively on the Tartan Tour and develop the coaching opportunities within. In my opinion when it comes to coaching: “Everything I work on with my students is about improving their ball flight, regardless of the standard they play at. I won’t change something in someone’s technique unless it has a direct and clear effect on what the golf ball does during its flight and benefits the pupil. This means my focus is on the 5 factors of the club meeting the golf ball i.e. Face Angle, Angle of Decent, Swing Path, Club Head Speed & the Quality of Strike. Within these factors, any golfer can be improved”
