Greetings from Jonnie Cliff
Murrayfield Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Good morning, golfers!

The 2015 Pro's Fun Day Texas Scramble is now upon us and we can't wait! We are still not sure if Duncan will be here as, at the time of writing, his partner Lindsay has not yet had the baby, so we are all very excited about the next few days!!

Please Please can everyone ensure that before Saturday we have all the entry fees and playing handicaps confirmed as, if we are a man down from staff (Duncan) on the day, it will be very busy in the shop! Also if you want to take on 'Beat the Pro' at the 10th hole for double your money, you will need £10 or £20 in cash on the day.

Apparently the weather is going to be great and Shane has confirmed the BBQ will be up and running all day!! We are really looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday!!

Ladies Reach Midlothians Interclub Final

Our ladies Team of Caroline Johnstone, Pat Walkingshaw, Debbie Haysmith and Caroline Steedman did an amazing job of getting to the Finals of the Interclub Championships at Turnhouse last week. Unfortunately they lost in the final when they were up against a very strong team. I think the ladies deserve a huge congratulations as it has been a very long time since Murrayfield has achieved this.

Brilliant Spring Meeting Scoring

The scoring for the men’s Spring Meeting was quite frankly ridiculous on Saturday past!! Daniel Bertram came in early with an amazing 61 which we all thought had it sewn up, only to be outdone an hour later by Chris Stuart who shot a lifetime best Gross 66 nett 58!! Yes, 66 less 8 for 58!! Andrew Ni equalled the best scratch score of the day also with a 66 less 2 for nett 64, and Alasdair Fraser took 3rd nett with a 64 nett so overall it was an amazing day for scoring!

The winners of the gents Spring meeting held on Saturday, 9 May are as follows:

  • Scratch - Andrew Ni (66)
  • First handicap - Chris Stuart (58)
  • 2nd Handicap - Daniel Bertram (61)
  • 3rd Handicap - Alasdair Fraser (64)

Gents Midweek Medal Wednesday, 6 May

Nett:

  1. Eric S Mcintosh (4) 66
  2. Andrew R Ni (2) 67
  3. Iain J Mccallum (6) 67

Scratch:

  1. Andrew R Ni (2) 69
  2. Eric S Mcintosh (4) 70
  3. Iain J Mccallum (6) 73

Well done Eric, Andrew and Iain on topping not only the best scratch but also the best nett scores on the day, very unusual to see that! That creeps all of your handicaps steadily down, it's great to see Iain out with a good score after a tweaking with his driver on Monday, worked a treat!

Pro/Member Challenge Matches

For those of you still wondering what the format is: team of four including one pro £30 entry, best one stableford score per hole on the front nine, two scores per hole on the back nine. Prizes will be allocated at the end of the season to the team with the most points.

This is great fun and we thought it would be a good idea for us to get out there more often and see how good the general standard of golf is at MGC and hopefully learn something!

Sign up your team now and let's book the game in!

Murrayfield Junior Team v Prestonfield

Our strong junior side won convincingly with a 5/1 on a raining Sunday afternoon.

A brief coaching testimonial from Chris Stuart:

The greatest game ever played...

"Over the past 12 weeks I have had scheduled lessons with Jonnie with the aim to improve my game from mid-irons to woods. My goal was simple, I wanted to make my bad shots better and my good shots excellent. Sounds very cliché but in golf as I'm sure everyone is aware, being in play and always having a chance with your next shot is vital. I had a reasonably unique way of striking the golf ball, Jonnie picked upon this very quickly and I was given two simple drills on my first lesson which we worked on the whole time. Until my next lesson I worked on the drill and a practice swing to drive the behaviour. I was hitting ball great at times but was falling into old habits occasionally. From my next scheduled lessons, it was really about the same message and executing it correctly. We worked on ensuring I was hitting the middle of the club consistently and understanding where the club face was in my swing, this is when I started to instantly see improvement, I was hitting the ball with a slight draw or straight with excellent flight and distance, the key from here was to practice and make the new changes stick.

I hit around 200 practice balls a week as I was committed to getting better as I could see the massive difference when I hit the ball with my new improvements. This has been instrumental in my game in the last month, my ball striking is miles better and I have a lot more control over my game, which has ultimately been the reason I had such an excellent score at the weekend of 66 gross, winning the Spring Meeting and smashing my previous best score!

I have more lessons with Jonnie booked in the diary as I aim to dial in the changes so they are completely natural to me, the best advice I can give for anyone looking to improve their game is, get lessons, practice what you are taught consistently, then schedule more tuition so all the progress you make is consistent and can be shaped in the right way and you will start to see results."
