Popov and DJ in leagues of their own There are sporting shocks, and then there’s the World No. 304 winning a Major! Germany’s Sophia Popov finished on -7 at Royal Troon to claim victory at the AIG Women’s Open. Despite having never won on the LPGA or Ladies European Tour before, the 27-year-old fought off challenges from stars like World No. 8 Minjee Lee and seven-time Major Champion Inbee Park. Kieron Stevenson, who used to be the Head Pro here is now the Pro at Troon said the weather for the first 3 days was horrendous and was surprised at how good the scoring really was. I had asked him if he got out to see any of the golf, but even he was not allowed out on the course to spectate due the the strict covid restrictions!!
Connor Syme lead the Welsh Open for 3 rounds but fell away in the final round, however, he did finish top 10 2 weeks in a row. Connor is from my home club, Dumfries & County and at one point he and another D&C member were 1st & 2nd on the leader board in the Welsh Open, Liam Johnston, who ultimately finished 15th. I would like to think my golf, whilst I was at D&C, inspired them both to go on into the Pro ranks, but they were about 5 and 2 years old when I left, so I think my impact was minimal!!!
Meanwhile, on the PGA Tour, Dustin Johnson won The Northern Trust, the first FedEx Cup playoff event, by shooting a staggering -30, at one point he was 11 under for 11 holes!!! That ended up being an 11-stroke victory, which raises the age-old question of what’s more entertaining:
