Rule 19 – Ball in motion deflected or stopped.
This rule is particularly relevant when playing in the winter foursomes for example. If you are playing and you hit a skewed shot which is stopped or deflected whilst in motion you may incur a penalty. However, there is only a penalty if the ball is deflected or stopped by:
- You or your equipment
- Your playing partner or their equipment (not your opponent as in the people you play against in foursomes)
- Your caddie (should you have one!)
If you do this there is a penalty of one shot.
There is no penalty if you hit your opponent in matchplay and you have the option to play the shot again or play the ball as it lies. Hope this helps, there will be more in the weeks to come!
