Autumn Golf Rules
Thank you to Shona Stewart for the suggestion we run a weekly rules explanation.
It’s that time of year when the leaves have fallen and golf balls can sometimes be hard to find, we’ve all been there but we need to be clear on what is the proper procedure as how to identify our golf ball.
Rule 12-2 Lifting Ball for Identification:
Over the past year, numerous incidents have occurred when members didn't know if the golf ball is there’s or not when on the course. You cannot just say ‘I know that scratch is mine’, you need to put an identification mark on the ball.
The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player!
If a player believes that a ball at rest might be theirs, but cannot identify it, the player may lift the ball for identification, without penalty. WAIT THOUGH! Before lifting the ball, the player must announce their intention to their opponent in match play, or their marker or a fellow-competitor in stroke play and mark the position of the ball.
Then you may lift the ball and identify it, provided the above have the opportunity to observe you lifting and replacing. Failing to comply with this procedure, you incur one penalty stroke. If failing to replace the ball the player incurs a general penalty of two strokes.
*You must not clean your golf ball when identifying it!
Hope this helps, there will be more in the weeks to come!
