Competition news

Murrayfield Men win the Interclub

Huge congratulations to the Men's team on winning the Edinburgh Gents Inter Club Trophy at the Royal Burgess on Saturday afternoon, beating a strong Ratho Park team by 6&5 in the final.

Earlier in the competition the team beat Royal Burgess 6&5 over their home turf in the first round on Thursday evening, before then beating Duddingston 8&6 on Friday night to make it through to final’s day. Craigmillar Park were comfortably dispatched 8&7 in the semi-final on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon's final was against Ratho Park, who had beaten Mortonhall that morning over extra holes to reach the final.

The two MGC pairs of Andrew Ni & Bobby Gibson and Alistair & Stuart Thurlow, ably managed by Stephen Stuart & Steven Anderson, played some fantastic golf throughout all four ties. This is the first time since 1925 that we have won this prestigious event.

One to one physiotherapist led clinical Pilates programs for golfers

Pilates is an exercise form of the body and mind targeting core stability, flexibility, endurance and postural and body awareness.

1 to 1 Physio Pilates offers Modified Pilates taught only on a one to one basis by a Chartered Physiotherapist. The program is designed specifically for the individual based on an assessment of that person's posture, flexibility and strength, personal goals, current and past medical history.

1 to 1 Physio led Modified Pilates can be particularly beneficial for:

• Those who experience recurrent episodes of mechanical spinal or pelvic pain, or who are recovering from a recent episode.
• People who experience regular pain due to working positions, postures or repetitive movements.
• Individuals who are recovering from an injury or after surgery (please get in touch to discuss your particular situation and timeframes).
• Those who wish to attend Pilates with an individual Physiotherapist led approach prior to attending group based Pilates.

Why is there a limit?

We’ve spoken a bit about the R&A and USGA in the past when it comes to the Rules of Golf, but golf’s governing bodies also set the limits when it comes to the manufacturing of golf equipment. This includes inspecting things like groove volumes of wedges, COR on iron faces and head sizes of drivers, which are limited to 460 cubic centimetres (cc).

Why are driver heads limited to 460cc?
This was set when drivers leapt from 250cc in 1995 (the first mass produced titanium drivers) to 500cc in 2002. Improving R&D confirmed that larger heads have a higher moment of inertia (MOI), which means that they twist less as impact resulting in straighter shots. At this point, golf’s governing bodies stepped in to ensure further technology improvements didn’t diminish the skill level needed to play well off the tee.

What are the benefits?
Larger headed 460cc drivers, like the Callaway Rogue, give you the biggest head possible, which means you can miss the middle of the face now and then and still hit a good shot. This is because they have more room for wider or taller faces, plus a forgiving, higher MOI that adds forgiveness.
