Bragging rights in the Douglas household as father and son duo, David and Graeme Douglas, claim first and third respectively. Especially well done to Graeme after a forced absence from the sport, it's great to see you back and playing well again.
We often get asked to clarify rules situations that arise out on the golf course, AFTER the round has finished. Unfortunately after hearing that the rules were followed incorrectly and that the individual is disqualified we often hear the phrase, "Oh well at least I'll know for next time".
Obviously you are not expected to know the entire rules of golf off by heart and even if you have a rule book with you it can be difficult to locate the rule that applies to the situation you find yourself in without undue delay. Never fear, the rules of golf have this covered!!
3-3. Doubts as to Procedure
"In stroke play, if a competitor is doubtful of his rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole, he may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls.
After the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action , the competitor must announce to his marker or fellow competitor that he intends to play two balls and which ball he intends to count if the rules permit.
The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the committee before returning his card. If he fails to do so he is disqualified."
So there you go, avoid unnecessary disqualifications and play two balls stating which one you intend to use if the rules permit. Remember, this only counts in stroke play, you cannot use this procedure in match play (Rule 2-5. Note 2).
