Mike shoots 70 at Scottish PGA Assistants' Championship Mike shot 70 last week at The Scottish PGA Assistants' Championship, finishing in a tie for 4th place at Cowglen Golf Club. After chipping in at the first for birdie, Mike found himself 2 over par with bogeys on 6, 7 and 9. Mike hit every green on the back 9 and birded 3 of this last 5 holes to card a level par round. The top 13 players have qualified to compete in the finals in Blackburn in June. The PGA Assistants' Championship pre-dates the famous US Masters by four years having been established in 1930. The PGA's longest running event is one of the hardest to win - players are only eligible to compete in the championship during their three years of training. Competition is not surprisingly fierce and equally unsurprising is the fact some of golf's biggest names have made their mark on the tournament down the years. Previous winners include Dai Rees (1935 and '36), Peter Alliss (1952), David Thomas (1955), Neil Coles (1956), Tony Jacklin (1965) and Barry Lane (1983). Qualifiers for this year's final will compete for a £5,000 first prize with the winner also receiving an invitation to play in the end of season PGA Play-Offs and to the Australian PGA Futures Championship.
