Watch out for this...

Sometimes the natural routing of the golf course makes our game a little harder, like when we find ourselves with the ball above or below our feet. Situations like these require a little extra concentration and often a few adaptations. The below set-up is another common example of where it’s all too easy to get caught out.

Angled tee box

Always know where you're aiming

For the vast majority of your round, you’ll find the tee boxes are helpfully aimed down the middle of the fairway. But there are occasions when the architect will try and catch you out by directing you towards trouble. The best way to counter this danger is to always be 100% sure of your aim before you take the club back, so try using these simple tips.

We recommend:

  • Stand behind the ball and choose your target
  • Draw an imaginary line from that back to your ball
  • Select a divot, broken tee or leaf already in place on that line just in front of your ball
  • At address, align your clubface precisely with the item you chose
  • Align your shoulders, hips and feet parallel to this

Sand saviour

When you see your ball roll into a bunker, don't worry if you tend to get nervous about your next shot; it happens to a lot of golfers. It's one of the reasons that hearing TV commentators say "he'll be happy it's finished in the sand" is so frustrating.

Lifestyle bunker

Obviously, these players practice day-in and day-out and so their skills are naturally going to be at an extremely high level - Ben Crane led the way in 2018 with a 66% sand saves success rate.

So how do you get better? Well, alongside having a bunker lesson to ensure your technique is correct, using a wedge that is designed to make bunker play easier - such as Callaway's Mack Daddy PM Grind - is key to getting up-and-down more often.
